The Monument to Nizami Ganjavi in Rome is a memorial dedicated to the 12th-century Persian poet and mystic, Nizami Ganjavi. Built in 2009, it is located in the garden of the Gulbenkian Foundation and is the only monument in the Western world dedicated to the revered author. The Monument features a bronze bust of Nizami on a stone pedestal, and was designed by sculptor Sultan Ali Mownatari, aided by architect Justo Garcia Herrero. It is a popular tourist attraction for those interested in Middle Eastern culture and literature, as well as those who want to know more directly about Nizami’s work and legacy. The monument is inscribed with a long quotation from Nizami’s masterpiece “the Garden of Fairies”, which speaks of the importance of hope, beauty and dreams.
