Discover - Eremo di Santa Romana - Fact, History and Travel Information
Eremo di Santa Romana is a historic hermitage (or "ermo") located in Marino, Italy. The site is of particular importance because it provides insight into the religious life of 19th-century Italy. The ermo was founded in 1857 by the Franciscan priest Don Antonio Colucci. Today, it is a gathering place for religious retreats and pilgrimages.
Built in the neo-Gothic style, the ermo is made up of three single-story buildings around a central courtyard. The main building houses a chapel with a wooden statue of the Madonna, as well as an altar for hosting religious services. The second building is the friary, which formerly served as a living space for the Franciscan friars who resided there. The third building is the guesthouse, which previously provided temporary shelter and meals to visitors.
The ermo was a point of refuge during World War II. In 1944, Marines escaping fighting found a place of safety within its walls.
The ermo is a popular destination for pilgrims, who come to get a glimpse of the religious life that characterized 19th-century Italy. Visitors can explore the courtyard and grounds of the ermo, as well as visit the chapel, friary, and guesthouse. The ermo also holds regular retreats and gatherings.
