The Catholic Diocese of Dallas is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church located in Dallas, Texas. It encompasses 10 counties in North Texas, including Dallas County, Collin County, Cooke County, Denton County, Ellis County, Hunt County, Kaufman County, Navarro County, Rockwall County, and Tarrant County. The diocese is composed of around 280 parishes, spanning 36,000 square miles and a Catholic population estimated at more than 900,000. History - The Catholic Diocese of Dallas was created by Pope Leo XIII on July 20, 1890. The diocese was taken from the Diocese of Galveston, which originally covered the state of Texas. Initially, the diocese was composed of Dallas, Rockwall, Ellis, Navarro, and Collin Counties, but it has since expanded to include nine counties. Facts - The Catholic Diocese of Dallas is served by one bishop and two auxiliary bishops. The Catholic Diocese of Dallas’ first bishop was Bishop Thomas Brennan, who was appointed in 1895. The current bishop of the Diocese is the Most Reverend Greg Kelly. Services - The Catholic Diocese of Dallas provides a variety of services and resources to the community. It sponsors a number of ministries and institutions, including human care ministries, campus ministries, Hispanic ministries, Catholic schools, adult faith formation, the Society of the Little Flower, the Office of Youth Ministry, the Diaconate Formation Program, and the Office of Spiritual Life. The diocese also operates a number of charity and social service programs, including shelters for victims of domestic violence and the Ignatian Volunteer Corps, a network of laypeople who are dedicated to providing service to others.
