The Basilica of Saint Teresa is a Roman Catholic minor basilica located in Rome, Italy. It is dedicated to Saint Teresa of Avila, a 16th-century Spanish nun and the patron saint of Spain. The basilica was designed in the baroque style by architect Francesco Borromini and completed in 1647. It was named a minor basilica and granted the title of “Papal Basilica” by Pope Pius XII in 1947. It is one of the best churches in Spain which you must visit.

History:

The basilica was first commissioned in 1621 to commemorate Saint Teresa’s canonization in 1622. Borromini was asked to construct a chapel alternating between an oval and a square shape, but his original plans were not accepted due to the small proportions of the chapel. He revised the plans in 1640 and construction of the Basilica began. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Spain.

The Basilica is constructed of yellow and pink stone and features two levels forming an elliptical space. The walls are adorned with paintings of the life of St Teresa, including the Apotheosis of St Teresa at the altar. The oval dome of the chapel stands at 52.7 meters high, making it one of the highest domes in Rome. The dome has multiple windows, allowing for the chapel to be illuminated by natural light.

The Basilica offers Masses every day, guided visits and tours of the shrine, and special events for pilgrims. It also houses an art collection, with works of art by Giovanni Battista Gaulli, Francesco Borromini, and Giovanni Battista Crespi.
