The Military Ordinariate of Slovakia was established in May 1991 by Pope John Paul II. The Military Ordinariate is responsible for providing pastoral care to all members of the Slovak Armed Forces, including those serving in foreign missions. The Ordinariate is headed by Bishop Viliam Judák, and is part of the Catholic Church in Slovakia. Its main activities include spiritual, moral, and material support of military personnel, their families and dependents, veterans, and civilian personnel associated with the Slovak Armed Forces. It is also responsible for providing spiritual guidance and ministry to both Christians and non-Christians, in areas such as marriage, family issues, grief and bereavement, and physical and psychological problems. The Military Ordinariate also participates in the training of future military chaplains and their assistants in the Military Chaplaincy School in Slovakia, as well as providing assistance to deployed military personnel and their families, whether on the home front or abroad. It also administers special liturgical and spiritual services at military installations, prisons, and hospitals, and conducts retreats for chaplains, officers, and soldiers.
