The present building of the cathedral was built between 1778 and 1788, replacing an earlier Gothic church which was destroyed by fire in 1777. The building of this baroque-style cathedral was commissioned under Bishop Isidor Pongrácz, who contributed much of the design and decoration himself even though the cathedral was designed and built by different architects. The main architect of the cathedral was Imrich Bornemissa, who was of German origin. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Slovakia.
