History:
The present building of the cathedral was built between 1778 and 1788, replacing an earlier Gothic church which was destroyed by fire in 1777. The building of this baroque-style cathedral was commissioned under Bishop Isidor Pongrácz, who contributed much of the design and decoration himself even though the cathedral was designed and built by different architects. The main architect of the cathedral was Imrich Bornemissa, who was of German origin. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Slovakia.

The cathedral has an octagonal votive church of St. Ján Nepomucký attached on its northern side. It is the largest of its kind in Slovakia. The height of the bell tower is 79 metres, making it one of the tallest in Slovakia. The altar of the cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, with four large paintings depicting her life. The choir of the cathedral is from the Baroque period and is one of the oldest in Slovakia.

The cathedral is open for mass on a daily basis, with some services also held in the votive church on Sundays. The cathedral also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, such as concerts and lectures. Visitors of the cathedral are able to explore the church and its many features, as well as take part in sightseeing tours of the area.This beautiful church in Slovakia has made a lot of significance in the past.
