It is part of the world-wide Seventh-day Adventist Church and is one of the largest churches in the country. The denomination includes churches, schools, hospitals, and other charitable ventures in Sierra Leone. The Sierra Leonean Seventh-day Adventist Church traces its roots back to 1920 when a missionary group from the United States arrived in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. These missionaries had already established a network of churches, schools, and medical facilities in other African nations and set out to do the same in Sierra Leone. The missionaries established the first Seventh-day Adventist Church on Pai Street in Freetown. Within a few years, churches had been established in other parts of the country, and national administrative offices were established in Bo, a city in southeastern Sierra Leone. Today, the Sierra Leonean Seventh-day Adventist Church has over 1,000 congregations and schools, with hundreds of thousands of members. Members of the church follow traditional Seventh-day Adventist doctrines, including a weekly Sabbath and a belief in the imminent return of Jesus Christ. The Bo Administrative Offices are the central leadership hub for the church in Sierra Leone, and coordinate all activities of the church throughout the country. There are numerous Adventist medical facilities in Sierra Leone, most of which were established by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. These facilities provide both medical and spiritual care to members of the church and to the general public alike. Medical facilities provided by the church include the Bo Mission Hospital in Bo, the Ministry of Social Welfare's Tuberculosis Treatment Center in Freetown, and the Seventh-day Adventist Community Clinic in Kono. Beyond medical care, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Sierra Leone offers educational opportunities for students at all levels and helps the Sierra Leonean government with providing food aid in times of crisis. The church also maintains one of the leading publishing and printing presses in the country, which produces books and literature for members of the church as well as for the general public.
