History:
The origins of St Ninians Parish Church can be traced back to the late 13th century, when the church was built on the site of an even older church. The church’s original purpose was to house the bones of St Ninian, who was brought to the church in 1229 from his final resting place in Whithorn, Scotland. Over the centuries, the church experienced several periods of restoration and renovation, including in the 16th century, when it was mistakenly attributed to St Columba and was renamed St Ninian’s Chapel. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Scotland.
