History:
St Andrews Cathedral was built during the reign of Bishop Robert of St Andrews, following a visit from St Andew himself in the 6th century. It was partially destroyed in the late 16th century during the Scotland Reformation. The cathedral survived the encroachment of the Scottish Reformation, becoming a parish church before eventually falling into ruin. In the late 19th century conservation efforts were undertaken to protect it from further destruction. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Scotland.

St Andrews Cathedral is the largest and most complete surviving example of early Gothic architecture in Scotland, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its western façade features twin towers and three large apses. Inside, the nave and transepts are surprisingly intact, with a number of notable grave markers.

The cathedral currently holds services on Sundays as well as concerts, lectures, and various other events. Visitors may take a self-guided or audio tour of the ruins as well as attend occasional guided tours.
