History:
Our Lady of Assumption was established in 1841 by Rev. Auguste Jeanjean, who had been assigned as pastor of the Tremé area. The first chapel was a small frame building located on the corner of Esplanade and St. Ferdinand Streets, where St. Augustine’s Church currently stands. As the population of the area grew, the chapel was replaced in 1844 by a new church which was located on St. Anthony Street. Fr. Jeanjean served as the pastor for thirty-eight years and was succeeded in 1879 by Rev. Jean Chezem. In 1905, the foundation was laid for a third, larger building which would serve as the current church. The new church was dedicated on March 24, 1907, by Archbishop John William Shaw. The following year, Our Lady of Assumption was placed in the care of the Redemptorists. Since that time, the church has served as a spiritual and cultural center for the Tremé Parish. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Saint Lucia.
