Worship Method:

The worship method of Zenkō-ji is a combination of traditional Buddhist theology and Shugendō mountain worship. At its core is the belief that anyone can access the divine Amida Buddha through veneration and dedicated practice. This is recognizable in the worshipper’s prayers, which are recited over and over until the desired state of devotion and understanding is reached. One of the most common forms of worship at Zenkō-ji is the "Daimoku", which is chanting the phrase Namu Amida Butsu, or ‘Homage to Amida Buddha’. This chanting is meant to facilitate meditation and align the chanter with the cosmic/divine realm. In addition to chanting Namu Amida Butsu, other chants and mantras may be performed during worship. Some of these include the Heart Sutra, the Lotus Sutra, and the Mantra of Light. All of these are meant to provide a path to awakening and liberation. Traditional offerings are also made during Zenkō-ji worship. These offerings include flowers, incense, fruit, and rice cakes. While all of these items represent different aspects of Amida's path to liberation, they are also meant to be offerings of gratitude from the worshipper to the divine. The Ritual Purification of Zenkō-ji is another important part of worship. During this ritual, worshippers bathe in either cold or warm spring water, and make requests to Amida Buddha for blessings, strength, and protection. This most visited temple in Japan
