Temple of Medinet Habu in Luxor is an ancient temple complex located on the west bank of the Nile River in Luxor, Egypt. Though partly in ruins, it is still one of the best preserved temples in Egypt and dates from the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses III in the 20th dynasty. The complex includes shrines and tombs of both royal and non-royal persons and was likely used for various religious purposes. The majority of the structures are carved out of limestone but there are also several sandstone and some granite structures. The architecture of the complex is a mix of both Egyptian and Kushite styles, which makes it particularly interesting. There is a large outer enclosure wall that protects the entire complex, as well as several pylons leading to a large inner courtyard. The main temple itself is surrounded by a series of small chapels and shrines, which were most likely used for private ceremonies or rituals. Inside the main temple there are some incredibly detailed reliefs and hieroglyphs, which give great insight into the religious and cultural practices of the ancient Egyptians. The Temple of Medinet Habu is now a popular tourist destination in Luxor and remains an important archaeological site.
