St James the Great, Colchester, is a church located in the heart of Colchester, located along Layer Road. It is a church of England church and one of the oldest in the town. Its history stretches back over 900 years, having been built in the 12th century as an Augustinian priory. It was then elevated to being a parish church around the 16th century, with the first recorded vicar appointed in 1550. It was again rebuilt in around 1845, although the original structure and tower remain.
