Santuario de Nuestra Virgen de la Soledad is a Catholic shrine in the heart of Oaxaca city, Mexico. The sanctuary was built in honour of the patron saint of the city, Nuestra Virgen de la Soledad and is one of the city’s most visited religious sites. It is believed that the image of Nuestra Virgen de la Soledad was bought from Spain in the 17th century and was placed inside the sanctuary in 1702. The sanctuary is made up of two chapels, with the main one dedicated to the Virgin. The main chapel contains important religious artifacts, such as colourful lace garments and the crowns of Nuestra Virgen de la Soledad and San Felipe, another of the patron saints of Oaxaca. The second chapel is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The site is part of the cultural and spiritual heritage of Oaxaca and is seen as a symbol of hope and faith by many worshippers. The sanctuary offers many devotional, social and cultural services, as well as religious retreats and other spiritual activities. Every 8th of September, inhabitants of the city make a pilgrimage to the sanctuary, to celebrate Feast of the Virgin and loyalty to their patron saint. Every year, thousands of people come to the sanctuary to pray and ask for the intercession of the Virgin.
