The church was founded in 1350 by the Orsini and Checchersi families, and entrusted to the Augustinians. Later it became the German national church and the cardinals of the church are Germans. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Rome.

The church offers Mass in both Traditional Latin and Contemporary English services, with a Vespers service and Benediction.
