History:

The Peter and Paul Fortress in Russia was built in 1703 by Peter the Great. It was constructed as a fortress to defend the new city of St. Petersburg from invasion. The fortress was originally built with four bastions and an outer wall around the perimeter. Within the walls were eight canals and seven gates. Originally, the canals were filled with water to supply the canons with water. Within the walls of the fortress were the original barracks, storehouses, churches, armories and other industrial facilities. In 1790, the fortress was converted to a political prison.
