History:

The Peter and Paul Fortress in Russia was built in 1703 by Peter the Great. It was constructed as a fortress to defend the new city of St. Petersburg from invasion. The fortress was originally built with four bastions and an outer wall around the perimeter. Within the walls were eight canals and seven gates. Originally, the canals were filled with water to supply the canons with water. Within the walls of the fortress were the original barracks, storehouses, churches, armories and other industrial facilities. In 1790, the fortress was converted to a political prison. It held the political prisoners of both the Tsarist and Soviet regimes, including Tsar Nicholas II and his family. During World War II, the fortress was heavily damaged and much of it had to be rebuilt. In 1957, it became a museum and is now a major tourist attraction. Today, the fortress houses various museums, a research center, a film studio, a naval church, and other attractions including the grave of St. Peter the Apostle.
