History:

Parroquia San Luis Obispo was founded in 1857 by Father Victor Louvet, a French priest who was sent to the area by Archbishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany from San Francisco. In 1863, the parish was incorporated into the newly created Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles. At the time of its founding, the parish served not only San Luis Obispo, but also the surrounding area of Paso Robles, Camp Roberts, Templeton, Santa Margarita and Atascadero. In 1941, the National Guard built Camp San Luis Obispo, which soon became the largest military post in the state of California.
