History:

The parish was originally founded in 1868 by Father Paul Emery, a missionary priest and the first pastor of the new parish. At the time, St. Anthony's Church was the oldest parish in Minneapolis. Father Emery purchased two lots northwest of the intersection of 29th and Lyndale avenues. He dedicated it to Our Lady of Lourdes, and the parish was established the same year. The church was dedicated on December 8, 1868 and the first Mass was celebrated on December 11, 1868. The first school, run by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, opened in 1877. In 1902, the cornerstone of the present brick church was laid, and the main sanctuary was completed in 1903. In both 1920 and 1948, the exterior of the church was renovated.
