The history of Moscow Metro stations begins in 1931 with the launch of the first line of the Moscow Metro. This line ran from Sokolnicheskaya to Park Kultury, and was designed by a team of Russian civil engineers, led by Nikolay Nikitin. The project was approved by the Soviet government and the first station was opened to the public on 15 May. The Moscow Metro system grew rapidly over the following decades. By the late 1950s, there were over 100 stations in operation. The network was further expanded in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s—and boasts over 200 underground metro stations today.
