Mastaba of Mereruka at Saqqara In Egypt: History,Facts, & Services

Mastaba of Mereruka at Saqqara is an ancient Egyptian structure located near the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara. Mereruka was a high-ranking court official under the reign of King Djet, the third ruler of the 1st Dynasty. His mastaba was built from limestone and was originally clad in white limestone. The structure features three chambers, which are lined with magnificent bas-reliefs carved in low-relief depicting scenes of daily life in ancient Egypt. Despite its name, the mastaba only has two stories, emphasizing the emphasis of Egyptian architecture on a symmetrical balance. The top chamber of the mastaba is often referred to as the "house of Ka", where Ka was the spirit of Mereruka. This chamber was richly decorated with glazed tile walls and several stelae depicting offerings and daily activities. The remains of Mereruka were also discovered inside, along with his wife. The site is now part of the Saqqara necropolis complex and serves as a popular tourist destination.
