This form of Zen Buddhism was introduced to Japan in the 17th century, and it has several distinctive features in its practice. Generally, formal worship begins with the ringing of a large bell at the entrance of the temple. After this, worshippers proceed to the main hall, bow reverently, and perform the “Kyosaku” or meditation ceremony.
