John Osteen, the founder of Lakewood Church, was originally a Southern Baptist minister who, in 1959, left his post to pastor a small Houston congregation. In 1961, the congregation moved to a larger building and took the name Lakewood Church. In 1974, John Osteen began airing the weekly televised service of the church under the name The John Osteen Evangelistic Association.
