History:

The House of Scientists in Novosibirsk was founded in 1964 as a part of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. It was created to provide high-level scientists and their families with comfortable living and working conditions. The House was located in an old mansion erected by the merchant O.V. Gamilin at the beginning of the 20th century. The House of Scientists contained residential and office buildings, as well as an extensive library stocked with over 25,000 books on natural sciences, engineering, and humanities. It was also equipped with cafes, a laundry, and a TV studio. Scientists were able to use various laboratory and workshop facilities, and the House even had its own secretariat. The first director of the House of Scientists was K. Rokhlin, who managed it between 1964 and 1967. He was followed by the mathematician G. Shabat in 1967, and the physicist V.F. Silvestrov in 1970. In 1975, the biologist A.A. Sagalakova was appointed as the director and stayed in this position until 1997.
