Born in Thessaloniki in 1912, Lambrakis was an avid supporter of non-violence and democratic socialism who opposed the Greek military junta of 1967-1974. On March 12, 1963, Lambrakis participated in an anti-war rally in Thessaloniki, during which he was attacked and beaten to death by three right-wing thugs. His assassination caused a national scandal and launched a series of protest rallies against the dictatorial regime, eventually leading to its downfall in 1974. In 2011, the then-mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris, commissioned the creation of the monument to finally honor Lambrakis' memory and commemorate his legacy.
