The area today known as the Diocese of Leicester was historically part of the Diocese of Lincoln, founded in 679. In 1993, Rutland was transferred from the Diocese of Peterborough to the Diocese of Leicester, expanding the diocese to cover the whole of Leicestershire, and the City of Leicester.
