The building is mainly Norman in origin and dates back to around 1160AD with additions in the 12th and 16th century. The church is notable for its beautiful stonework, including its south doorway, and its structure which follows the traditional plan of nave and chancel. It also boasts an impressive font and an intricately carved rood screen. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in England.

The church is thought to have been built on the site of an old Saxon chapel, and holds the tombs of some notable people from its history, including the families of the Fawsley estate which was situated nearby. The church also contains a variety of monuments from different eras, including a memorial to two men from Fawsley who fell at the battle of Edgehill in 1642.
