History:
The site of Chiesa di Sant'Anselmo all'Aventino was originally owned by a noble Roman family, who also owned nearby Palazzo Lancellotti. The family commissioned the current building in 1584, designed by a well-known architect of the time, Giacomo della Porta. The façade and part of the interior of the church are inspired by the Renaissance style. The current vault of the ceiling is a later addition. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Rome.

The façade of Chiesa di Sant'Anselmo all'Aventino is adorned with sculptures that represent the evangelists and the four Doctors of the Church. Inside the church, there is a large 18th-century copy of Canova's statue of Anselm. The original is located in Rome's Lateran Museum. The main altarpiece was created by a certain Giovanni d'Ambrogio and is a 17th-century painting depicting the Virgin Mary and Angels. Other important works of art include frescoes by Domenico Mona, Antoniazzo Romano, and Giovanni Baglione.
