History:
Chiesa di Santa Maria della Scala is mentioned in records as far back as 1256. It is believed to have been built during the mid-14th century, most likely between 1341 and 1363. The church was completed using the Gothic architectural style and it served as the pious center of the Servite Order, of which a community of Servites lived and worked in the nearby monastery. In the late 16th century, the east end of the church was destroyed, though it was later restored. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Rome.

The church is noted for its large rose window, which was added in the 14th century. The building also features a facade of white and black marble. The interior features a number of paintings, including a crucifix created by one of the most renowned Sienese painters of the 15th century, Neroccio de' Landi. Other notable works are those of Bernardo di Bandini, Luca di Tomme, Michele di Firenze and Giovanni di Corraducci.

Chiesa di Santa Maria della Scala holds services for the faithful as well as for visitors. Masses are held twice daily, with a special Eucharistic celebration taking place in the evening. There are also prayer meetings held each week and various activities are organised for visitors from around the world.
