Chapel of the Virgin of the Harbour In Spain: History,Facts, & Services

The Chapel of the Virgin of the Harbour is a Catholic chapel located in the port district of Valparaíso, Chile, near the harbour. It was founded in 1854 by the Sociedad Círculo Progreso, a local Catholic association, and is dedicated to the Virgin of the Harbour, patroness of the seafarers of Valparaíso. The light blue-and-white chapel is in the neo-Gothic style with a large central rosette window and a 68-meter-high spire, making it the tallest building in the port. It is also known as the “Cristo de los Operarios” (Christ of the Workers). In 2006, the chapel was declared a National Historic Monument. It holds daily services for the community, including baptisms, weddings, funerals and other traditional Catholic ceremonies. Tours of the chapel are also offered and its beautiful stained glass windows and Gothic architecture can be admired.
