It is believed that the original building of the Basilica was built in the sixth century, and it was known to have been used by Pope Eugenius IV in 1431. During the Renaissance, it underwent several renovations and re-modelling, and in 1660 it was rebuilt by Giacomo della Porta in its present Baroque form. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Rome.
