It was opened in 1817, when Tsar Alexander I directed the construction of a “winter-residence” for his family—the Romanovs. The construction was done in the Baroque style typical of Russia of that period. The Garden was expanded over the years, with features including a pond, a gazebo, and a baroque-style bridge, as well as a number of sculptures, fountains, and other attractive landscaping elements. The Garden marked the period of Russian residential activity between the Kremlin and the embankment of the Moscow River. During Imperial times, the Garden was a popular place for strolling and socializing among the nobility. In the 19th century, the Garden was used by Russian officers and cadets for practice sessions and military drills. In 1916, the Alexandrovsky Garden hosted a celebration marking the 300-year anniversary of the House of Romanov, and Alexander I led the festivities.
