Sant'Atanasio In Rome: History,Facts, & Services

Sant'Atanasio is an Italian Catholic Church located in Florence, Italy. It is dedicated to the Saint Athanasius of Alexandria, and is a famous example of the city’s Renaissance architecture. Construction began on the church in the 15th century and it was completed in 1477. It features a distinctive octagonal bell tower and is home to several important works of art including a painting by Raffaello and sculptures by Luca della Robbia. Sant'Atanasio History The church of Sant'Atanasio was built circa 1427 for the wealthy family of the Rucellai. It was built on the site of an earlier church dedicated to Saint Christopher. The drum of the original Romanesque structure, which included a clock tower, was incorporated into the new Renaissance building. In 1481, the exterior façade of the church was given a series of classical columns with composite capitals and bas-relief decorating the frieze. Sant'Atanasio Facts - Sant'Atanasio is one of the most famous examples of Renaissance architecture in Florence. - The interior of the church features an octagonal dome, which is decorated with a fresco by Andrea del Sarto, depicting the Adoration of the Magi. - Sant'Atanasio also houses the Rucellai family chapel, which contains a polyptych commissioned from the workshop of Bernardo Daddi. Sant'Atanasio Services Sant'Atanasio holds religious services throughout the week, including Mass and vespers. The church also offers musical programs, such as concerts and organ recitals, and has a bookshop that sells books related to the Catholic faith. Additionally, the church offers tours of the building and its artworks on the first Sunday of each month.
