History:
The church was founded in 1223 by King Louis IX to commemorate his canonization. It was originally located in what is now Place St. Louis in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris. Over the centuries, the church has undergone many construction and renovation projects. The most significant of these took place under the reign of Louis XIV, who gave the church its present Baroque structure, which stands to this day. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Rome.

Church of St. Louis of the French is the oldest active church in Paris and the only royal church in Paris that remains standing. It is one of the three royal basilicas in Paris, along with the Sacré-Coeur and Notre-Dame de Lorette. The church is also home to several sacred relics, and the popular figure of the Black Crucifix of St. Louis that is said to have been blessed by Pope Urban IV.
