Discover - Rome–Lido railway - Fact, History and Travel Information

Rome–Lido railway is a railway line that connects the city center of Rome to Ostia, Italy's seaside town. The 22-kilometer line is operated by ATAC and is used by passengers to move between the city center and the Adriatic coast. The Rome–Lido railway has a total of 8 stations with the Roma Termini being the main station for the line. The line runs on the west side of the Tiber River, with 7 bridges crossing the river. The railway was built in 1924 and allowed passengers to travel along the Tiber and enjoy the coastline, allowing them to take a journey of more than 18 kilometers (11 miles). The line was originally used primarily for commuter traffic, yet also became popular for sightseeing and pleasure trips. The line is currently mostly used for everyday commuting, yet falls into disuse in the summer between May and September as most of the Romans leave the city for holidays. The only two sections that remain in use for pleasure trips are the initial segment between Rome Termini and Frattocchie and the segment between Lido Centro and Ostia. In the past, the line had services running directly from Rome to Lido Centro, but the services were cancelled in 2008 due to poor ridership. The last service ran on December 29th, 2007. The line is currently served by four trains per hour, with each journey taking around 30 minutes. These trains run between both Ostia and Rome Termini, although there are some limited services which run directly to Lido Centro. In addition, the service is supplemented by bus routes running parallel to the line. The Rome–Lido railway is part of the regional network of railways and is owned by Regione Lazio. The line is electrified and is served by the Tuscolana–Ostia (a.k.a. Lido) trains, which are hauled by E.464 or E.465 series locomotives.
