Seventh-day Adventist Church In Portugal: History,Facts, & Services

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a Protestant Christian denomination based in the United States that emphasizes a belief in the nearness of Christ's second coming. This denomination was founded in the mid-1800s by William Miller and follows many traditional Christian beliefs. The historical roots of the Seventh-day Adventist Church can be traced back to the Millerite movement of the 1840s. Miller, a Baptist preacher from New England, predicted that the second coming of Jesus Christ would occur between March 21, 1843 and March 21, 1844. Though Christ did not come on the expected date, followers of Miller remained faithful to their beliefs and began to refer to themselves as Adventists in the 1850s. In the 1860s, a group of Adventists called the Seventh-day Adventist Church was formed. These individuals believed that the Sabbath should be observed on Saturday, in contrast to other sects of Christianity who observed Sunday as the Sabbath. This principle of observing the seventh-day Sabbath has become the central tenet of the denomination. Today, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has some 19 million members worldwide and operates in 215 countries and territories. Members of this denomination practice traditional Christian beliefs, including adherence to the doctrine of the Trinity, and interpret the Bible in a literalist fashion. The Seventh-day Adventist Church provides a variety of services, from worship and religious study to educational programs and healthcare services. The denomination's educational offerings include a basic education program in elementary and secondary schools and a variety of higher education institutions such as colleges and universities. Additionally, the church runs many healthcare centers and clinics around the world, providing free and low-cost primary health care and preventive health care services.
