Santa Iria was a 7th-century Spanish princess believed to have been martyred at the hands of the Moors. Legend states that Santa Iria was beheaded in the region of Oia after refusing to pay tribute to the Muslims. The chapel is believed to have been built in her honor soon after her death. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.
