Wat Phuttha Chaiyo is a Buddhist temple in Sukhothai, Thailand. It is located in the western part of the Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is the most important historical temple in the area.
Overview
This temple was built in around 1293 during the Sukhothai Kingdom and is believed to be the oldest temple in Sukhothai. The temple complex consists of several small chedis and large brick walls that are still well preserved. The central chedi is made up of a three-tiered spire and has several Buddha images inside. The whole complex is surrounded by a deep moat which was built in order to protect the temple from invaders.

History
The temple was built in around 1293 by King Ramkhamhaeng of the Sukhothai Kingdom. According to a legend, the temple was built at the site which was the place of a miraculous escape by the King’s son who was chased by an elephant. The temple was originally named Wat Phuttha Chaiyo, which means “the temple of Victory” in Thai.
Travel
The temple is located in the western part of the Historical Park and it is easily accessible by car or motorbike. The temple opening hours are from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and entrance fee is 20 Baht. Wat Phuttha Chaiyo is a popular site for Buddhist pilgrimage in the region and it is worth visiting for its historical and religious significance.
