Overview:
The temple is a mix of Thai and Chinese-inspired architecture, and the main temple building is carved from a solid piece of white stone, a large elephant sculpture sits at the entrance. Inside, visitors can see beautiful murals depicting Buddha, along with a plethora of statues. It is an active Buddhist temple.
Facts:
Wat Chom Phu Wek is believed to have been built by King Maha Thammaracha II around the mid-16th century. The temple is known for housing numerous religious objects and artifacts from the Ayutthaya era, including a large seated Buddha statue, four smaller standing Buddha sculptures, and a variety of historic documents.
History:
Wat Chom Phu Wek is thought to have been built as a symbol of King Maha Thammaracha II’s devotion to Buddhism. He also established the nearby temple, Wat Chaeng, in the same era. Wat Chom Phu Wek was abandoned in 1767 when the Burmese army invaded Ayutthaya and destroyed the city. It has since been restored and is now a popular tourist attraction.
Travel:
Wat Chom Phu Wek is easily accessible, as it is located less than an hour outside of Ayutthaya City. The temple can be accessed via tuk-tuk, private taxi, or rented motorbike. Visitors should note that the temple is closed on Sundays.
