Discover - Old Phu Quoc airport - Fact, History and Travel Information
Old Phu Quoc Airport, formerly known as Rach Gia Khanh Hung Airport, is an old international airport located on the island of Phu Quoc in southern Vietnam. The airport was closed to commercial flights in 2013, but has been undergoing renovations and restorations to accommodate an increase in air traffic.
The airport is situated on the northernmost part of the Phu Quoc island, and the nearest major city is Rach Gia. The area surrounding the airport is mainly sand dunes, while the runway is located on relatively flat ground with some hills.
Old Phu Quoc Airport has a 400-meter long runway and a 1000-meter long taxiway. The airport has basic facilities, including passenger terminals and associated services, such as baggage handling, ticketing, and customs processes.
The airport's history dates back to the 1950s, when it was first constructed by the French. In 1984, the airport was upgraded and extended, making it capable of handling up to 450 passengers per hour. The airport underwent further renovations and improvements in the early 2000s, making it capable of servicing international flights.
In 2013, the construction of a new international airport began in another part of Phu Quoc, and Old Phu Quoc Airport was closed down to commercial flights. Although it is no longer used for regular flights, the airport is still available for charter flights and charter helicopter services, as well as private charters.
