Discover - Chang Phuak Muslim Cemetery - Fact, History and Travel Information
Overview:
Chang Phuak Muslim Cemetery is one of the oldest in Thailand, having been in use since the 16th century. It is situated right next to Chang Puak Gate, one of the oldest gates in the city and is a place of considerable religious and cultural significance. The cemetery covers an area of more than three acres and houses numerous graves of Muslim people who passed away in Chiang Mai.
Facts:
The cemetery comprises of both ancient and contemporary graves, ranging from plain stone tombs to elaborately carved memorials and headstones. The cemetery has two main sections; one section is dedicated to the graves of Islamic people and the other is for locals. Today, the cemetery still serves its purpose and is used for burial and funeral services for local and foreign Muslims alike.
History:
The cemetery dates back to the 16th century when the first Muslim settlers arrived in Chiang Mai. During that time, the cemetery was used to inter the remains of merchants from the Middle East, India, Burma and China. Many graves from the Chakmak dynasty, a dynasty of Muslims that ruled over Chiang Mai for nearly two centuries, are also present in the cemetery. As time passed, the cemetery grew in popularity and stature and became a place of pilgrimage for Muslims from all over the world.

Chang Phuak Muslim Cemetery is open to anyone visiting Chiang Mai. The cemetery is located right outside the Chang Puak Gate and can be easily reached by car. Although the cemetery is open, visitors should show respect while visiting, as it is a place of both religious and historical importance. There is also a mosque nearby that visitors can visit and learn more about the area's rich cultural history.
