History Sagrada Familya was founded by a group of lay members of the Roman Catholic Church in 1899. The group was composed of Filipino intellectuals, who desired to have a church of their own that reflected their own beliefs, customs and culture. Sagrada Familya was officially formed on June 19, 1944 in Tioqui-an, Negros Occidental by the first two Spanish priests, Father Manuel Ybanez and Father Pedro Llobet. Facts – The cornerstone of the Sagrada Familya Church was laid by Archbishop Gabriel Reyes in 1946. – In 1967, Sagrada Familya was granted full autonomy by the Vatican. – Sagrada Familya has approximately 2 million members in the Philippines. – The church continues to work closely with the Roman Catholic Church and is recognized by the Rome-based Catholic hierarchy.
