The Minor Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel In Philippines had its beginning as a chapel, built in 1843. However, it was not until 1903, when the construction of the current stone church was begun, that the church became a true basilica. The project was funded by Don Ildefonso Rivera y Cuesta, who also provided the funds to complete the richly ornamented exterior. The Church was inaugurated in 1911. The Minor Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel In Philippines is the only basilica in the Philippines dedicated to the archangel St. Michael. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Philippines.
