Minor Basilica of San Sebastian, or San Sebastián basilica, is a 19th century Gothic Revival church built in Intramuros, Manila. It is being maintained by the Order of Augustinian Recollects, a small clerical religious order originally coming from Spain. The basilica is noted for its architectural features like its unique all-steel retablo, stained glass windows, and the use of cement in the altar. It is dedicated to St. Sebastian, the Catholic martyr. The Minor Basilica of San Sebastian, commonly known as the San Sebastian Church, was declared in 1973 by Pope Paul VI, who gave it the title of “Minor Basilica”, becoming the only all-steel church in the Philippines and in Asia. The basilica is known best for its unique steel retablo, which was made entirely in Belgium without any nails or screws. It is considered as a “masterpiece” of Celestial Art by Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo and other national painters. It continues to attract various tourists and pilgrimage participants, both local and foreign alike. The basilica also features devotional images of the Blessed Mother, St. Joseph and St. Teresa of Avila, a Spain-based saint. The church also offers various services like three-day retreats for Catechists and seminars for various organizations, as well as Masses and novenas for the people.
