The baroque-style Church of St. John the Baptist, which is popularly known as the Binondo Church, is the oldest in the country and stands in the spot where the very first Christian mass in the Philippines was celebrated in 1521. The church was heavily damaged by multiple earthquakes in the 17th and 19th centuries, but has since been restored to its full glory. Binondo Church is the oldest existing church in the Philippines and was built by the Dominicans in 1594. The Dominicans arrived in the Philippines in 1587, headed by Fray Domingo Salazar, and immediately set about re-building churches and monasteries that had been destroyed during the conquests and wars. The site where the Binondo Church was built had previously been where the first Christian mass in the Philippines had been celebrated in 1521.
