The Franciscan Monastery in Palestine is a monastery of the Order of Friars Minor, more commonly known as the Franciscan Friars. It is situated at the heart of the Old City of Jerusalem, nestled in a centuries-old olive grove it shares with the adjoining churches of the Holy Sepulchre and Mount Zion. It has long served as a spiritual refuge and as the headquarters for Catholic administrations in the Holy Land. The monastery’s history dates back to the time of the Crusades in the 13th century, when Franciscans first settled in Palestine and began their mission of caring for the sick and the poor around Jerusalem. It promotes pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and assists in the maintenance and conservation of the many ancient and historical sites with invaluable Christian heritage. The Monastery also offers a range of services, from medical and social services to educational and cultural programs. Its most iconic structure is the Chapel of the Flagellations, which commemorates the events of Jesus' Passion and death.
