The story of the church began in the 19th century when Princess Elizabeth, who originally came from Greece, visited the site of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Here she was deeply moved and had a strong spiritual experience. This eventually resulted in her offering to build a church and dedicate it to her own name. The church was built in 1880 and has been maintained since then. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Palestine.
