Dominus Flevit Church In Palestine is a Roman Catholic church located on the Mount of Olives, near Jerusalem, Palestine. It is believed to mark the site where Jesus wept over Jerusalem. The church was built in 1955 and designed by Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi. Its name translates from Latin as “The Lord Wept”. This church is part of a larger complex of two other chapels, the Chapel of the Ascension, and the Chapel of the Pater Noster. It is one of the best churches in Palestine which you must visit.

History:

Dominus Flevit Church was erected in 1955, on the site of an earlier 6th century Byzantine chapel. Many believe it was on this very spot, the area known as the “Pater Noster,” that Jesus wept as he looked out over the city of Jerusalem. According to Christian tradition, it was also near this area that Jesus taught the Our Father prayer (better known as the Lord’s Prayer). This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Palestine.

Dominus Flevit Church is built in the traditional architectural style of Jerusalem. The white walls contrast starkly against the backdrop of the Mount of Olives, providing a stunning view of the city of Jerusalem down below. Inside the octagonal-shaped structure is an altar as well as a mosaic that depicts Christ weeping. On one of the walls of the church is a plaque placed by Pope Paul VI, who visited the church during his pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1964.
