The church was founded by Rev. Thomas Mar Athanasious in 1845, who was appointed as the first settled priest of the Kottayam Diocese by the then Malankara Syrian Metropolitan Mar Dionysius III. The foundation of St. Paul’s Marthoma Church marks the beginning of Marthoma School Movement in Kerala. Since then, it has grown to become one of the largest Marthoma denominations and one of the leading churches in India. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Oman.
