The Al Khabourah East North South (E.N.S.) Mosque is one of the largest mosques in Oman. The mosque was designed by renowned Omani architect, Dr Ali Al Jazzaf. The building is distinguished by its white marble exterior, ornamental arches, domes and intricate Islamic art. The mosque is built over multiple stories. Its interior features a magnificent prayer hall, an extensive library, a majlis (a hall used for formal gatherings of elders to discuss matters of community interest), a study room and a children’s playing area. The main prayer hall contains a large dome, two minarets and two arched entrances, all of which are surrounded by protruding marble columns. The mosque features a large courtyard that is open to the public. The courtyard is enclosed by an ornamental fence, which provides a sense of privacy and helps define the clique-like atmosphere that is common among Islamic architectural structures. The courtyard also features a pool and a fountain, as well as a large shade tree that provides shelter in the scorching summer heat. In addition, the courtyard contains a guava tree and a few other trees that provide a canopy of shade. The mosque is a shining symbol of Oman’s Islamic heritage and a popular tourist destination for foreigners.
