Brief History:

Al Ghubrah West North South Mosque was built in 1982 by the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs in the grounds adjacent to the Muttrah Souq. The mosque is located in Muttrah in the Muscat Governorate of Oman. In its early days, the mosque was attended by mainly middle-class families, before turning into a regular place of worship for both Omanis and non-Omanis. In 2019, the mosque was refurbished and splendidly adorned to meet the requirements of worshippers. Al Ghubrah West North South Mosque offers many services to the community in Muttrah. This includes providing family counseling for married couples, encouraging networking between individuals, offering religious guidance, and acting as a religious guidance for those in need or lost in life. The mosque also holds the weekly Friday Jumu’ah and other religious services, and often facilitates halaqas (Islamic lectures). Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr celebrations are also held at the mosque. Architecture:

The Al Ghubrah West North South Mosque, located in Muscat, Oman, is an example of traditional Omani mosque architecture. The mosque is composed of three prayer halls, each dedicated to one of the three main Islamic prayers: Fajr (dawn), shurooq (midday), and asr (afternoon). The central prayer hall, the main focus of the building, is aligned to the north and is well proportioned and symmetrical with a large dome decorating the top. It is surrounded by four small minarets and a tower and has two entrance doors adjacent to the minarets. The other two prayer halls, located on the east and west sides of the mosque, are smaller but still have large domes as their main features, and are connected to the main prayer hall via covered corridors. The north facade of the mosque is highlighted with light colored walls and has two tall entrance doors surrounded by two small iwans. The two tall doors, once used to separate the mosque's preachers and worshippers, have since been removed and replaced with several smaller entrance doors. The mosque is finished with traditional Omani ornamentations, such as colorful tilework, intricately carved plasterwork, and decorated shutters. A landscaped garden wraps around the entrance of the mosque and is located in the center of the courtyard. Also featured in the courtyard is a Quranic school and a traditional Omani market.
